STEP 1: Measure Your Fence Line
Walk the perimeter where you want to install your fence with a tape measure. Measure each straight section and add them together to get your total fence length.
PRO TIP: Use stakes or spray paint to mark corners and gate locations. This makes measuring easier and helps visualize your finished fence.
EXAMPLE:
Your backyard has four sides:
Back wall: 15m
Left side: 20m
Front section: 10m
Right side: 20m
Total: 65 meters
STEP 2: Account for Gates
Decide where you need gates and what size. Subtract the total gate width from your fence length, as gates replace fence panels.
Pedestrian Gate Width:
Up to 1.1m (can be reduced on site by installer if required)
EXAMPLE:
From your 65m total, you need:
1 x Pedestrian gate = 1.1m
Total gates: 1.1m
Fence length: 65m – 1.1m = 63.9m for panels
IMPORTANT: Consider access needs carefully. Will you need to get a mower, wheelbarrow, or vehicle through? Double gates provide maximum flexibility. Electric slide gates are also available. Check specifications for details.

STEP 3: Calculate Fence Panels
Standard Alumina Haus panels are 2.4 meters wide. Divide your fence length (minus gates) by the panel width, then round up to the nearest whole number.
FORMULA:
Number of Panels = Fence Length ÷ Panel Width
Always round up. It’s better to have a slightly shorter section than to be short one panel.
EXAMPLE:
Using the 63.9m from our example:
63.9m ÷ 2.4m = 26.6 panels
Round up = 27 panels needed
PANEL OPTIONS: Some panels come in different widths. Make sure you check the specifications.
STEP 4: Calculate Line Posts
Line posts support your fence panels. You need one post at each end of every panel, which means one more post than the number of panels. Additional posts may be needed to factor in gates. It is a good idea to draw out your panels on a plan, including gates—this will show you how many posts you need.
FORMULA:
Line Posts = Number of Panels + 1
Each panel attaches between two posts, creating a continuous fence line.
EXAMPLE:
With 27 panels:
27 panels + 1 = 28 line posts
